January Favorites: Beauty
Are you nosy? I AM. I love perusing other blogs and checking out what other beauty junkies are using. It especially helps when I’m shopping for a new product. Don’t you want to know what works for other people? Granted it doesn’t mean it will work for you, but there’s a good chance!
Anyway, I have decided to jump on the bandwagon and post my beauty faves for January :D I know, it’s already February, but it was Chinese New Year, and there was too much going on…(but everyone who knows me knows that I’m always late, heh).
I have combo skin. Oily/dehydated. Lovely stuff. I know that it’s the lack of hydration that makes me oily, and this damn winter is NOT helping. After I turned 25 (eons ago), my skin started getting wacky, getting dry patches out of nowhere, especially when the seasons changed. Since then, I’ve been on the hunt for super moisturizers that don’t make me break out. And I stopped using foaming cleansers because I’m convinced they’re drying my skin and hair out. Foaming doesn’t mean cleaner, it just means STRIPPED. So no products with sodium lauryl sulfate, the stuff that makes your products foam (there’s a lot of articles about the toxicity of SLS as well, but I’m no expert).
Back in early
December November when Sephora had their VIB sale, I bought REN’s Cleansing Balm and I’m in love! The texture is something to get used to though. It’s a dense herbal-smelling balm that you scoop out, rub between your fingers like you’re warming it up and melting it, then massage it on dry skin. It’s like rubbing oil all over your face, so you might think, EW. But to me, it’s so luxurious and it takes all my make up off. I also love the smell. Then you wipe it off with a warm towel before rinsing your face with water. If you want to make it a bit milky, just add a little water to your fingers before working the products. I don’t take my mascara off with it though – I haven’t found a way to get it off without burning my eyeballs, though I manage to take my eyeliner off just fine. Weird.
I use it religiously every night for the last
two three months and I still have tonnes left. Sometimes I use it with my Clarisonic Mia, which I also love. Not only does my skin instantly feel smoother, I swear products absorb into my skin fast and easier after I use it. Everyday seems a bit much, so I only use it 3-4 times a week.
I have been living under a rock until last December. I cannot believe I had not discovered sleeping masks or packs or facials, or whatever you want to call them until the same Sephora VIB sale. THEY ARE A MIRACLE PRODUCT.
MIRACLE I tell ya.
I used to apply a face oil before my moisturizer so I wouldn’t use half a jar of cream in one go, but since I’ve discovered the wonderful world of sleep masks, my world has changed for the better. I bought the Korres Greek Yoghurt Sleeping facial at Sephora because I was looking for a simpler way to moisturize. I remember seeing it quite a while ago but thought I needed to apply a visible layer to your face and sleep with it on. How mucky would my pillow get?? Thank goodness I was wrong, but took me a long time to figure that out. You really just apply it as a moisturizer. The first few times I used it, I applied 3 layers of it before my skin felt supple. That’s a lot of product. But after that, something amazing happened: I only needed a dime-size amount, as opposed to a toonie-size! And it’s been that way since! It’s as if it healed my skin of something. Though it’s called a sleeping facial, I use it day and night because I love it so much.
These things have been around for a few years, so as I said before, I’ve been living under a rock. There’s tonnes of them out there in various brands, and they seem very popular in Korea, where they typically call them Sleep Packs. Another I discovered I like is the Boscia Intensifying Moisture Pack +. I got it for $12CAD on Sephora, instead of the typical $36CAD. Sweet deal huh? I think $36 is a great price though, since the Korres is $59CAD. With the Boscia, you can either apply it as a moisturizer, or apply a thin layer that you massage in and leave on for a couple of minutes before you tissue it off. Frankly, I think that’s such a waste, heh, so moisturizer it is for me! I will warn you though, that it can leave your skin a bit shiny – it takes a little while to completely absorb. Annnd, your face might stick to your pillow a little. If you’ve been sleeping on your face and you turn, your pillow case will peel off of you, haha. Once again, a dime-size will probably suffice. I’m a fan of subtle scents in my products, and I love this one: a little herbally (do you see a trend here?) and refreshing.
My Missha BB Cream in 27 is taking me FOREVER to use up. I bought this in April 2012. Yeah, it’s almost been two years, but you can probably see why. In the above picture is all I need. I like a tiny bit of coverage, much like a tinted moisturizer, and a tiny bit of this stuff goes a loooong way. After I pump a bit out, I rub it between my fingers, lightly pat it all over my face, and then smooth out the edges a bit with my finger tips. It’s fast fast fast which is important when my toddler loves getting into everything he’s not supposed to.
Let’s see, what else is there? I’ve been using MAC’s Select Moisturecover for a long time. I try not to think about the flock tip applicator because of the lack of hygiene buuuut it’s easy. I have a Pro Longwear concealer waiting when this one is done. After becoming a mom, I’m convinced my undereye circles are darker than ever, so I want a bit more coverage.
I’ve also been using Smashbox’s Lash Primer for a long time, along with Clinique’s Lash Power, a smudge free, warm-water-removal mascara. On it’s own, it doesn’t give my lashes enough oomph, which is why I always use a primer underneath. There are other ‘tube’ mascaras out there, but I particularly like Lash Power’s small thin brush. With my skimpy Asian lashes, big fat brushes just get mascara past my eye lashes and all over eye lids, which is counter productive, so I need a little brush to catch my little lashes. I am looking for another lash primer though; I find Smashbox’s a little messy and goopy though it does a great job.
When I wanna get a little fancy and put on eyeshadow, I NEED a primer. Oiliest lids in the entire world, right here. I’ve tried Urban Decay and Too Faced, but they don’t beat I Nuovi’s Eyebase. All I need is a smidge. I’ve had that tube for a million years, and it feels brand new.
Blush is one of those products I can’t leave the house without. It makes me look ALIVE, like there’s blood still flowing through my veins. One of my favorite bloggers LOVES her Tarte blush, so when I saw this palette during Christmas, I lunged for it. Holy moly is it pigmented. I stipple once with my brush, and that’s plenty of color. And all of those colors are beautiful.
Don’t laugh, but my New Year’s resolution last year was to wear more eye liner, and to broaden my range, which really only consisted of my Makeup Forever Aqua Eyes pencil in 3L. I bought a bunch of Urban Decay liners which I love for their consistency and colors, and I also love this Marc Jacobs liquid liner. I typically hate liquid liner. It’s difficult to find one that’s a. REALLY black, b. Draws a precise line, c. Doesn’t run all over your face after you yawn. This one fits the bill, and easily gives you a really nice wing. I also love his Lip Lock Moisture Balm. It’s a little bit minty and has a twist lock feature. I save this one for when I go to bed – a little luxury at night :) After I’m done this one though, I have a Fresh Sugar lip balm waiting for me to try, which I’m excited for as well because there’s a lot of good reviews out there for it.
That sums up January! What are your beauty favorites? Share!!
